Exquisite Corpse Project - Up

My Motion Graphics II class created a two-and-a-half-minute film based on the “exquisite corpse” method of art creation. The exquisite corpse is a technique that grew out of the surrealist art movement of the early 20th century where art was created by multiple artists, each contributing to the final composition in sequence.

The class chose the theme of favorite media, such as movies, TV shows, or games. For my 5 seconds, I created an animated piece based off of the movie "UP." The color palette was composed of playful, bright colors based off of the original house's color scheme. The important and difficult part of the project was making sure that the end and beginning of the animation seamlessly transitioned with my classmates' animations coming before and after my animation, which meant that my first frame had to be the same as my partner's last frame, and that my last frame must be identical to my second partner's first frame.

The goal of this project was to create 9, 3 second animated gifs with a limited color palette per gif. Each gif must illustrate one of the twelve principles of animation, as defined by Walt Disney’s original group of animators, known as the “Nine Old Men”; 1. Squash and Stretch, 2. Anticipation, 3. Staging, 4. Straight Ahead and Pose to Pose, 5. Follow Through and Overlap, 6. Slow-in and Slow-out, 7. Arcs, 8. Secondary Action, 9. Timing, 10. Exaggeration, 11. Solid Drawing, and 12. Appeal.

I chose, in order presented above (from left to right), Slow-in and Slow-out, Appeal, Anticipation, Secondary Action, Follow Through and Overlap, Exaggeration, Squash and Stretch, Staging, and Arcs
